The One and Only Sound of Music Tour Since 1967

Salzburg and the hills around it are still very much alive with the sound of music, and this tour is the best way to follow in the footsteps of the Von Trapp family. Visit all the main filming locations and learn about the social and historical contexts of the area in the late 1930s. The tour takes in sights in the city and in the surrounding countryside. In the city proper, a number of places were used for the 1964 film. See the Mirabell Palace and gardens, where Maria and the children sing Do-Re-Mi and Residenz Square, which Maria crosses by bus from Nonnberg Abbey – where the real life Maria and Baron von Trapp were married in 1927 – on her way to the Trapp Villa singing I have confidence in me. The Rock Riding School is a particularly significant location as the real life Trapp family sang there before they fled Austria following the Nazi takeover. In the film, they sing Do-Re-Mi, Edelweiss and So Long, Farewell in a memorable scene. Leopoldskron Palace was used as the Von Trapp family home and while the gazebo used for the famous ‘I am 16 going on 17' scene was here in the film, it is actually at the Hellbrunn Palace. Head to the countryside around Salzburg to visit locations such as the village of St Gilgen on Lake Wolfgang, which features in the opening credits, and the church at Mondsee, where the wedding scene was shot.

Salt Mines

The history of Salzburg is intrinsically linked to salt and indeed its very name means ‘salt fortress’. The countryside around the city is famed for its salt mines, which produced ‘white gold’ in an area far from the sea and which have been an immense source of wealth since time immemorial. This is a salt mine visit with a difference as you enjoy a roller-coaster ride of emotions deep inside the mountain. Head south of Salzburg, past the beautiful baroque Hellbrunn Palace, into the stunning Salzburgerland countryside before arriving at the mine, which closed in the 1980s after centuries producing salt. At the mine, receive protective clothing to keep warm – and to look the real deal! Travel in a former miners’ train into the heart of the mountain while a guide regales you with tales of the salt mining in the area since Celtic times thousands of years ago. Discover this secret world of kilometres-long labyrinths dug by miners, with their bare hands, deep into the mountain. Using the wet mining technique, they would dissolve the rock in water and thus end up with salt. Once inside the cave, have fun on the long miners' slides and enjoy a wonderful raft cruise across a subterranean salt lake. There is also a magical multimedia show that will light up the underground lake and blow you away. Head back to the outside world aboard the miners’ train having discovered the rock on which Salzburg was built.

Kehlsteinhaus Eagle's Nest

Soaring high above the Bavarian Alps is the Eagle’s Nest, the former mountain retreat of Adolf Hitler. The Kehlsteinhaus, as it is called in German, enjoys stunning panoramic views over Berchtesgaden and the surrounding countryside. It is the only surviving relic of those used by the Nazi dictator in this scenic area. The Eagle’s Nest was a 50th birthday gift to Hitler from his secretary, Martin Bormann, who had gone to a great deal of effort to have it built on top of the Kehlstein ridge, more than 1,800 metres above sea level. An extremely expensive access road, which included five tunnels, was built over a 13-month period. But after all that effort, Hitler didn’t like the villa as he was scared of heights. The Kehlsteinhaus is located about 45 minutes from Salzburg and you will enjoy a breathtaking journey up the final 6.5km stretch of road to the property. On arrival, a lift takes you more than 120 metres through the mountain and directly into the chalet. This Alpine retreat is a masterpiece of modern architecture and was decorated with furniture made by one of the leading designers of the era and a red marble fireplace gifted by Mussolini. Because the Eagle’s Nest was untouched by Allied bombing in the war, it remains in its original state. Enjoy some free time to explore the old conference room, the dining area, the small tea room and the terraces, while your guide will explain the background to this beautiful property with a dark past.
